It's nice to life people up... But man ... When your words don't match your body language, it's so much worse.
Since he talks to people off camera he knows when people are being less genuine on camera... So you can try to look to him for clues about that.... You can really tell when he's bored, but he just tells himself suffering is good. Basically.
Also he dropped his pen because his wires got crossed, so to speak. He went to alleviate a tickle on his face, and when he did so he let go of the pen with one hand; but still had his index finger out. His brain thought that he had, in a sense, set the pen down and yet still had it in the hand that was in motion. Simultaneously. Since he let go of the pen with one hand, it was no longer an issue to one side of his brain and that idea transferred to the other side. Mistaking the pen as a finger as well as a non factor, mixed with his other thoughts, he just let go for a split second before catching it.
