Marketing is a scam.

In 10 years, I built a business with $200m in assets and annual revenues of $100m with virtually no advertising. Doesn't mean I did none, but my growth was almost entirely due to addressing an obvious need, working hard on product quality and letting word of mouth do the ad work for me.

What was the business

It is in the education sector.

Marketing is more important the less differentiated the options are. Where you see a lot of marketing, buy generic.

If the options are undifferentiated in a market, the market is saturated and low margins are the signal. I wouldn't be interested in participating in that sector. I would sell that business. I'm interested in creating new value.
