If you've been elected to a position of public trust, if you've taken an oath, lying should be a crime.

nostr:npub189nhq0cw33243htm08c53vjvgc5letv7d9sgqtgqsn6fnx6dv8zs0fsatx This is very similar to the logic behind the state bar rules that forbid lawyers from lying.* (And the First Amendment doesn't prevent the enforcement of this kind of speech rule against us.)
* Yes, yes, I know! But regular lawyers can & do get in serious trouble & disbarred if we attempt even a fraction of the kind of shenanigans these MAGA clowns do. (Why there's so much of a difference in enforcement is left as an exercise for the reader.)
nostr:npub189nhq0cw33243htm08c53vjvgc5letv7d9sgqtgqsn6fnx6dv8zs0fsatx i remember a brief period in my youth when every other month a politician in Austria had to step down because of a shitty thing they did (or… because they didn't do their job).
That feels like an awfully long time ago.

And that oath should be administered to all candidates for elected public office.
nostr:npub189nhq0cw33243htm08c53vjvgc5letv7d9sgqtgqsn6fnx6dv8zs0fsatx I would totally settle for committing a crime being a crime at this point.
nostr:npub189nhq0cw33243htm08c53vjvgc5letv7d9sgqtgqsn6fnx6dv8zs0fsatx I'd guess that one is, but who knows the arcane laws of the US?
