Have to say, my opinion of Swisher dropped a notch after this.

The idea of supporting age limits on social media (or is it the entire internet?), and treating this as so obviously correct as to be unworthy of debate, is one of the most braindead takes I've heard in a long time...

Specifically she equates this to the fact that we require age verification for purchasing tobacco, alcohol, & etc... so why not social media?

This totally misses the fact that those are physical transactions occurring in real time between two physical human beings, and on the internet, nobody knows you're on a VPN.

So any reasonable effective implementation of this policy would require one world government to meter internet access... That's a good thing?? 😒

nostr:npub147fp2j606qpfysp38phhzvempt7ewsdqwm6uww9uycp6tdvavu0s5paq44 it would be a terrible thing. I was so shocked by her position that I didn’t have a strong counter argument prepared!

I’m running a campaign to stop age verification and bans from social media here in New Zealand, b416.nz

Fighting the good fight, that's great!✊ In the US seems like we already lost in SCOTUS....

I have to say though, these kinds of age verification practices, if they were seriously enforced, would push a whole lot of activity onto Nostr and similarly decentralized platforms. Especially porn. To quote Goldblum, "Life... uh.... Finds a way."

Yeah I was shocked by her stance myself! I wasn’t prepared for her to come out so strongly in favor of banning minors and enforcing kyc for social media.

I wish I could say I'm surprised. I feel like it's been a very long time since I heard her say something interesting. I feel like I'm missing something because so many people like her, but always seems like one high level bad take after another.
