On my walk earlier, i noticed that some of berries on the American beautyberry bushes have started to turn, and i love that purple color. #nature #hiking #homesteading

Is that what we call callicarpa or something else?

Yes, pretty sure that's it.

Jelly is not my thing but my understanding is they are bland but really good when sugar is added and make a good jelly, if so they should also make a good syrup, if that is your bag.

Yeah i've tasted them raw, not much flavor. But i've heard some folks make wine with them.

I feel like they'd be good on a salad with the slight herbal sweetness. We came across them hiking the Lonestar Hiking trail and a lady said people made wine out of them.

Yes i've heard that too. Btw, how was that hiking trail? We've thought about trying parts of it.

We've only hiked a couple of sections, I'll have to ask the husband which ones they were. I want to do the sections on the north end of it, it sounds like those are a little more interesting. But it's all probably swampy with all the rain we've been getting ☹️. Take lots of water and electrolytes because there's none available on the trail.

Good to know, thanks.

This book is a great resource!

The leaves rubbed on your skin are a great bug repellent. Learned all about them when I came across those bright purple berries last year.

I've heard that about the leaves, but have never had to use them for that. I need to experiment.
