No, the difference is setup and client. Apparently my setup hides the spammer, yours does not. So, the protocol can definitely work, but as I said before, some clients might be lacking or needs a bit more work to set up in a satisfactory fashion.

If you want the protocol not to work, you sure can. But you can also make the protocol work. It's a choice. And yes, this is more work compared to using a platform, as you outsource that work to the platform overlords. The price you pay for the liberation of platform overlords is that you - and only yourself - have to take on that extra work to make it usable for you.

If you've been deplatformed before, you know which choice is more valuable.

LOL

I'm not going to spend a year of my life learning to use a horrible protocol that 0.0000001% of world population even knows about :-D

Mastodon does most of the things people claim Nostr can or will be able to, but Mastodon actually works. It's simple. You can post images, videos. You can block people. Why don't Nostr fans admit that Mastodon is years ahead of them?

They have different tradeoffs. I like the model of Nostr more because the underlying protocol is super simple. Anyone with the slightest programming experience can build stuff for it. It's almost as simple as writing a Hello World exercise.

That level of simplicity makes it possible to build a large variety of experiences on top of the protocol, that - in my opinion - is not possible on Mastodon, Bluesky or other open networks.

yes i admit mastodon is ahead of nostr so what?

The truth is valuable because it is true.

If I were to recommend a network to a friend she would be a million times happier on Mastodon than here.

nice, yes do that

Depends on the trade-offs, in some aspects Mastodon is better, in some aspects Nostr is better. It's perfectly fine to have a different choice depending on your preferences.

You cannot compare Mastodon to Nostr. You must compare Nostr to ActivityPub. Or Mastodon to any Nostr client. About free speech, you cannot prevent someone saying in real life also don’t you? FYI I’m also on Mastodon and know how the federation models works. Compared to the Nostr models there are trade-offs to both models. It’s up to you to choose what fits you best. 🫶🏻

when someone already made up her mind that nostr sucks, well it sucks not matter what you say, no need to defend nostr, just a waste of time. im here because i dont think it sucks

what are the advantages and disadvantages of both?
