I want to get a newer phone this year and trying to gauge whether the Samsung S20 with 8GB will be sufficient for a few years. Its 2x the RAM of my current phone (galaxy S8), but I'm seeing latest Samsung models have 12GB. iPhones tend to be more conservative for RAM which is also interesting.
Discussion
1. Don't get a Samsung OR an iPhone. Samsung is junk and filled with bloat. It's got a great display and that's about it. iPhones are walled gardens and cost too much money.
2. 8Gb RAM is plenty for pretty much anything going forward forever imo. Focus more on storage capacity for future proofing. 256Gb.
what phone would you rec him instead
I kept my recommensation for out because I didn't want to seem bias towards a particular brand BUT if you're asking OnePlus. I've been through 3 iterations now, starting with the 1+5 then I got a 1+7 Pro and now I'm on a 1+9. You can get a OnePlus from last generation brand new from them for MUCH cheaper than what any comparable phone will cost. It's important I mention I tried other brands between every 1+ model I've carried. They just didn't perform nearly as well so I returned and got the 1+ instead. Tried Sony Xperia and and Asus Zenfone in between.
I repaired phones for my career for 5+ years before I do what I do now. Take that info for what it's worth. I feel my understanding of QC in each brand is extensive. Samsung QC is terrible. Their parts are all dirt cheap and their storage chips and batteries are iffy at best. iPhone on the other hand are actually wonderful. Very well engineered. Just... It uses iOS and walled garden etc.
I could go on forever about my extensive knowledge in the field of mobile phones and what all I've used in the past. Used to be a big fan of Moto as well. Maybe they have some good stuff. Idk, they fell off after Lenovo aquireed them. Lg is garbage. Pixels are nice, just not for me. Fingerprint reader in display is king for 1+. Nothing is faster or comparable for security.
thank you so much i did not know about Samsung
oneplus or pixels so.
w het you think about huawei?
As an American, I can't say that I've had my hands on any Huaweis; at least not in a very long time. They may be good, I just don't know. Be cautious about CCP spyware. Could be American propaganda so take with a grain of salt, I err on the side of caution.
I like the Pixels a lot but I need a fingerprint reader and they only have facial recognition. ew. The speed of the 1+ fingerprint reader is unmatched by anyone.
I was telling everyone about Samsung well before the Note 9 exploding disaster. I saw it coming a mile away with how shit their batteries were. Samsung makes the best displays on the market though. Hands down. That's why Apple uses Samsung displays ;)
Thanks for this helpful information. I'm looking into the OnePlus 9 vs the Samsung S20. Things important to me include screen dpi, ideally a headphone jack
I haven't looked into usbc to headphone adapters but I must have a quick way to switch to headset that doesnt deal with the unreliability of bluetooth
OnePlus fast charging seems like it's far better than the Samsung.
What things about the 1+9 do you not like
What about cameras? Does the one plus have a reasonable camera?
So historically, they have great Cameras but the software for image stabilization amongst other things is lacking, but generally everything is sorted and optimized with updates after a few months.
They currently partner with Hassleblad to bring really high end cameras to the platform.
Heres one I just took on my OP9 for reference. Keep in mind OP9 is 2 generations back. I think it's a great camera.

Idk how much compression imgur does either. Here's full res of a caterpillar I took the other day.
Sorry I missed this comment. I miss my headphone jack :(
But the other phones that had it (my Zenfone) are just miles behind the performance.
I really can't think of much bad about this phone at all. Sometimes the Bluetooth is not so great at going very far away from the source.
I also love the notification/volume switch to quickly put my phone on silent.
I looked into this further and while the OnePlus 9 doesn't have a headphone jack, it reportedly has a DAC allowing it to work with passthru USBC to headphone jack adapters (the cheap kind) vs Samsungs and Google Pixels which don't
I may end up getting one sooner rather than waiting a few more months. Price isn't going to change drastically from here and its inside targeted sweet spot.
If you spring for one, let me know how you like it. I got a feeling you will love it. The fast charging is stupid fast and the fingerprint reader in display is faster than lightning network.
