Why normalize the violence in public?
To scare people away from raping infants?
A little bit of public justice eliminates a lot of private evils.
No it just creates an underground market.
That underground market exists today without the execution of infant rapists.
Better to have the latter.
Ideally there would be multiple layers of theological, social, and political incentives, of which public executions would be a strong one.

Because I've studied anarchist thought and it usually falls apart in this area.

I think Chaos Theory by Bob Murphy and maybe the Machinery of Freedom also hit on it.
There are some pretty developed theories around it. It seems to me, without the coercive state, many HOA type opt-in communities would have somewhat differing methods, but all handle criminals more justly than our system.
