How can you selectively publish notes/events to certain groups of users?

The complicated ways I see:

- Private groups (you're not necessarily the admin)

- Hosting your own relay (who's going to host a relay for each category of people they want to broadcast to)

Could one relay partition in to groups or sub-relays? nostr:npub1qqqqqqyz0la2jjl752yv8h7wgs3v098mh9nztd4nr6gynaef6uqqt0n47m

Curious to how that would scale

I have this idea of virtual relays. I definitely think it’s possible.

Would this be the most logical choice for private groups as well? Or is there another way to create private groups?

If you have a virtual relay only you know how to access, any conversation in it will be somewhat private (groups included).

I’d be careful to name anything private this day and age though, privacy is more of a spectrum… what works for you may be unacceptable to someone else šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

Privacy depends on who it is from.

Privacy from lay people? OK, you can have that.

Privacy from tech savvy person? You need to do some work and have the discipline of a monk.

Privacy from a state? Not a thing.

Privacy from Sri? Not a thing 🄲

Ignore. Made a typo

Privacy from Stu? Not a thing

What does it mean to publish to certain group of users? You mean limit who can see your note?

Yup, like Instagram's "Close Friends" feature for example.

ā€œPrivate groupsā€ are on a lot of people’s mind. (As a serious real world use case of nostr) I’ve reviewed a couple proposed NIP architectures that try to accomplish this : gift wrap using either individual or shared keys, depending on ā€œsizeā€ of group.

IMHO, having two ā€œkindsā€ of groups will be a UX disaster.

As a nostr noob, I don’t expect my ideas are all that great. But I did read ALL the documentation of these proposed NIPS and might have found a simple and overlooked solution. (Maybe the start of one…)

A ā€œGift Bagā€ type of ā€œGift Wrapā€

Wow, thanks! I was looking for a thread that dives into this.

What's the purpose of limiting the content to a selected group of people?

Privacy: selectively revealing your events. There's quite some notes I'd only want to be seen by the people I follow for example.

But the more I think of it, the more I see private groups solve most of this issue.

Time to learn how private groups can work on nostr!

Interesting. Will follow the progress that's for sure. ty
