Open to hardware ideas too. I’d prefer something compact, raid setup. Of course I could build something but wondering if anyone is using some NAS-specific hardware

How much space do you need? You might be looking at a mini PC with a couple of nvme slots and pair of disks in raid0. I mostly use and lean toward retired enterprise equipment.
These kinds of things can get very specific to your usecase, budget and hardware bias. Mine leans toward second-hand enterprise equipment.
