What I was trying to say is: I don't think I would be able to protect myself at all. A single headshot means lights out. And as I'd rather stay alive I believe being attacked by a lunatic with a knife increases my chances to survive compared to a lunatic attacking me with a gun from short distance.

A lunatic with a gun or a knife of a toothpick can kill someone. That is impossible to stop. It’s the second, third, fourth etc attacks that guns will stop in a way that knives and toothpicks won’t.
