Do you do anything else before putting it through the berkey? Pre filter?
I dont bother any more, just try not to tip any bits of grit in there. The compartment isn't sealed so sometimes dust etc drops in when I lift the lid, so it needs rinsing out every now and then anyway

Maybe look into one of these if you haven't already (with fine mesh filter), I have one, just need to get around to getting it installed.
