Comparing my current phone (14 pro max) against a phone two generations ahead... nothing is really enticing me to upgrade. Summarized notifications using apple intelligence is nice, but not worth $1500

They are so expensive

When I learned the amount of cash Apple has on hand, I refused to pay for a new phone every year. I would wait until mine stopped working.

https://www.cnbc.com/2023/11/02/apple-now-has-162-billion-in-cash-on-hand-less-than-last-quarter.html

I still use a 5 year old Apple Watch because there have been no new features worth spending a dollar for.

I got a watch ultra earlier this year and I’ll only upgrade when the battery is bad

I upgraded from X to XV, that seemed about the right pace.

The new camera aid seems handy, as I still find it hard to press the shutter without moving the device. Though the stabilizers do their job.

Thankfully battery life seems to be improving inversely proportional to Moore's law slowing down. Going two years on the same battery used to be very challenging.

In this case I skipped one year of out five, and the last year I did feel better when carrying a power bank just in case.

My iPhone X didn't have the 80% charge cap IIRC. Using that most of the time, I suspect my iPhone 15 battery will last at least 4 years. Which means it's probably more likely to die from me dropping it.

Might have to stop using Nostr with ten relays over wireguard with 5G at some point :-)

The iPhone X never felt slow, unlike earlier generations. Though it helps that I don't play games.

+1 🤝🫡

I approve this message

USB-C 😉

I bought my sister a 15 Pro the day before the 16 came out because I knew it wouldn’t be a huge upgrade. 17 probably won’t be either. I’m on a 15 Pro Max myself, I see no reason to upgrade.

If they add mechanical variable zoom on the telephoto on the 17 pro, I’ll upgrade.

iPhone 5 was probably the best. Next is the iPhone 13 mini imo. Give me back my headphone jack

I was on iPhone 6 until I upgraded to 14. 😂😂😂. I plan to keep this one another 8 years. 😂

Crazy that a new “generation” is released every year

I have the same impression.

Can you record calls on the 14 pro max ?

I think so? isn't that an 18 feature. I never need to do that though

yeah but not all 18 features work below iPhone 15

it’s pretty useful, never thought I needed it until having it, holds a lot of people accountable for timelines n deliverables

I still use 13

on an XS, only lacking in the battery regard

other than that, happy to stick with it

Batteries have been the only reason for me having to upgrade phones and laptops in general

I upgrade my iPhone every couple of years. Usually around the time the battery needs replacing 😂

On a serious note. From 12 to 15 pro was a good camera bump. All else is meh.

If you buy a cheap pixel and flash it with nostr:npub1c9d95evcdeatgy6dacats5j5mfw96jcyu79579kg9qm3jtf42xzs07sqfm you will never go back

ehh I'm pretty cozy in the entire apple ecosystem at this point. having my airpod seamlessly connect to my tv when I'm watching in two different rooms.

airpods are probably the main reason I'm stuck in apple. they are the best earbuds I've ever owned and they transition seamlessly accross all my devices.

linux needs something like apples continuity framework, its so good.

Completely in the same camp. I think my AirPods are the single most loved piece of tech I own. Actually MacBook Air M1 comes pretty close. Add an AppleTV to the mix and it’s hard to imagine escaping the Apple black hole.

Last night i was on the couch playing oldschool RuneScape on my phone while my airpods were connected to my apple tv with a show on. I dunno if android devices can do that but connecting my airpods to my tv is such a killer feature i use all the time since my couch is far away.

Depends on the devices. I can do it with my Sony WF-1000XM5's, and I think Galaxy Buds can do it. But those cheap shit earbuds that cost $30 aren't capable.

They’re stuck.

💜

I’m still using an iPhone 13 mini but I gave in and have a 15 pro on the way. Battery and camera upgrades is what I want.

I’m posting this from a $350 iPhone 11 Pro. When I upgrade it won’t be an apple

If you're switching soon, here's a tip you might not hear: it's pretty important to make sure you get a Snapdragon chip right now. Other chips like the ones in Pixels are having issues that won't be solved until driver updates roll out next year at the earliest. When this is fixed, supporting Snapdragon's monopoly won't be my advice anymore, but it is for now.

Thanks for the tip. Won’t be upgrading any time soon.

Probably a great choice you're making there. Respec

One more thing you might not hear about - even a cheap phone can do video output over USB but a lot of phones block video output for no reason. If you make sure your phone has video output over USB, you can plug it into one of those docks with HDMI and a USB keyboard+mouse to use it like a computer. Might be worth checking that on whatever phone you buy

Still on 13 pro. Legit no reason to upgrade

it has better battery life/heat dissipation, more ram (8GB) and can use fast external usb-c ssd drives for video recording or data transfer

#GrapheneOS This is the way.

Still on an iPhone 12 mini. Not a fan of Apple, but it was one of the few phones at the time that was still suitable to carry comfortably in your pocket.

Battery life is medium, but I see it as a great physical restraint to spend less time on my phone. Win-win either way.

My $650 phone can run GTA V or modded Fallout 4 at totally playable framerate, I feel like iPhones are still years away from doing this

To be fair, the CPU in the iPhone is surely strong enough already, what's years away is users being allowed to do this

Totally get that—sometimes upgrades just don’t feel worth it. Same reason JoyID focuses on meaningful changes, like supporting Lightning Network. It’s about real improvements, not just shiny features. 🔑

Apple and Smartphones are the next things to be decentralized!
