I think I get what you're saying.

Kinda like saying what makes a man jealous is seeing another have what he wants and be happy. And what makes him upset is seeing another have the thing, but remain unhappy.

The latter breaks the fantasy that having that thing would make him happy. And in the former case, he may put up a facade and say he could be happy too without what he wants.

Yeah, think that is pretty close! It's what advertising plays on I suppose.

The exact scenario I'm picturing is when a small (to remove jealousy of unattainable things like expensive sports car) victory makes you feel that high that the world is going your way and you get that rare pure happiness. Haters, often bad friends, will be quick to wanna stamp that feeling out, not because they are jealous or mad at the small thing, but jealous of the feeling you're experiencing. Not sure that makes sense
