Yes, anyone who wants can walk away/opt out--while it may seem simple, and it is in a sense, for some people, it also requires commitment, focus, and constant work. We’re all deeply programmed. Unlearning a lifetime’s worth of conditioning is a loooooong journey. Possible, but not really straightforward. I've been on this journey for many years now... and finally learned as well that not everyone wants to be free.
