HG Wells was born very close to where I lived growing up in Bromley and Charles Darwin lived next to where I worked in Biggin Hill, in a place called Downe.
Also David Bowey lived a few streets away and his mum used to shop in my best friends, mums green grocer shop.
That's pretty cool.
The section that really got me was "... he English are not gifted artistically. They are not as musical as the Germans or Italians, painting and sculpture have never flourished in England as they have in France. Another is that, as Europeans go, the English are not intellectual. They have a horror of abstract thought, they feel no need for any philosophy or systematic “world-view”. Nor is this because they are “practical”..."
We lived on a small Island and needed to conquer the world in order to get our daily cup of tea.
