Just a thought on films. If you really like a film or think it is important, buy a physical copy on DVD.

Why? Watching older films, even from the 80's and 90's, I've noticed many things that would get something "cancelled" today. Additionally, films that are already controversial, speak the truth or hit too close to home are often quietly disappeared. How long until many films are attacked and withdrawn for good?

With the rise of streaming services that control what is viewed we need to curate what we like and what is important.

Also good in a blackout situation to hang out with the family and watch a classic, whatever that means to you.

Been rewatching stargate sg-1 with the missus lately... noticed a Bruce Jenner joke in the episode forever In a day 🤣🤣

Exactly, at what point will that be "not funny" anymore.

In this house, never 🤣🤣

Good idea.

Absolutely. I run a JellyFin media server with 4tb of stuff. Lots that are hard to find. Gotta keep it alive!

Beed buying old DVDs and books for a while for this reason, also the fact that most old stuff I want to watch seems to be paid to stream now!

Try Odysee for older stuff, seems to be a good amount at times, before it's pulled down.

Same thing with books. Ebooks might be convenient, especially when traveling, but I want paper books that can't be deleted or changed. I could totally see an ebook on a Kindle or similar suddenly getting an "update" to keep it woke.

Yep, it’s already happening. Even to print books, but at least publishers can’t re-edit the paper books we already own.

So it's already occurring? I know they did it to Roald Dahl, rewrote the books. I have been meaning to read 1984 and I worry is already modified and I wouldn't know know.

I think we would have heard if a recent edition of 1984 had been modified. It’s not something that can be hidden, given the many paper copies in existence, the number of readers interested in Orwell, and the fact that the novel is about rewriting history.

For sure. But I bet someone is thinking of it right now, without seeing the irony 😂

Definitely, books are even more at risk. I prefer a hard copy book over digital any day. The day of the e-book woke updates is probably not too far away.
