If there's one thing that should be blasted at the start of every news broadcast, every YouTube video, every fiat podcast, it is this.

THE GOVERNMENT CANNOT PAY BACK IT'S DEBT.

It is the lens through which everything in the political reason should be viewed though. That fact colors everything and reveals all of the lies.

I believe they could, but it would mean an incredible increase in taxes and they refuse to even consider alternatives.

The only way out, historically, through thousands of years of attempts at fiat money in countless civilizations, is debasement and collapse. If everyone knows, it will just happen faster. Is faster better? Who knows?
