I would imagine the french redeemed it for gold, but even then it would only be ~1.4bn today if my math is right which is still a massive bargain.
Wild that the US purchased 530M acres of pristine land from France in 1803 for just $15M.
Today, $15M only gets you a single fancy house in central SF/LA/NYC.
