I kinda know what you're saying actually, was thinking about this on a run today.

I think everyone has a natural cadence and pace where they can just "settle in"

I just can’t “zone 2” mentally.

I’m either competing with myself and overcoming, or I’m trying to pace myself and I lose it mentally.

Agree. I found you have to do something (like play Padel) to keep your mind off the pace/time.

Padel is perfect Zone 2 action. Play for 2 hours, job done.
