Both need to go to make the world a better place
Their people were indeed slaughtered, often by their own leaders, Stalin and Mao, but also invaders like Napoleon, Hitler, the Japanese and British. So the people sought protection from an intrusive state and forfeited all their freedoms to it. We cannot understand their mindset.
