having spent some time on Threads, i actually think it will be successful.

its success though isn’t in anything that Nostr is trying to achieve.

instead, Threads seems to be focused on a conversation around influencers (celebrity and NFT promoters) the same way that twitter (used to) be a conversation around news and the journalists reporting on it.

in fact, this seems to be a secular trend of fracturing of social media platforms generally that probably has been ongoing since the rise of facebook.

where twitter used to be all-purpose, it’s now:

Twitter: laggards and Musk loyalists

Bluesky: journalists and liberals

Nostr: bitcoiners and cypherpunks

Threads: influencers (celebrities, NFTs)

Farcaster: ethereans

Truth social, Gab: qAnon, MAGA, xenophobia

i think this is the new normal for social media. RIP the general purpose platform.

If Threads is just celebrities and NFTs then it dies a quick death, or stays on life support as a scrolling TMZ.

🤮

ppl have been talking about celebrities and pop art since forever. not my preferred topics, but some ppl are into it.

Sure.

But it doesn’t make a massive social network.

To each their own? People seem to really like categorizing things. Hypercategorizing, warp speed!

☝🏻

Sounds tragic. Thanks for the insight though.
