Well why you should work in the field you studied, in the first place?
I had my cousin, he studied civil engineering because it was his parents ...dream, and then he did master and doc in France into materials stuff and now he is working I Switzerland as a bank analyst.
Imagine he got awarded from the French academy and he doesn't include any of those achievements in his CV.
So, choose a major you love (better than what your parents love) and of you are hard working you will find the solution.
(Ofcourse, "everybody" loves dogs, not everybody should become a dog trainer, I m talking about an educated choice, close enough to what you really love)
