The beauty is that the practicing of just a few of these principles passively encourages the practice of the others. It’s like sticking a microphone in front of a speaker.. crazy positive feedback loop. But in a good way.

that 3rd ethic has had some interesting interpretations. "non-extraction" is a new label. who started that one?

Non-Extraction is the most succinct way I could come up with to describe it. Failing to redistribute surplus could be interpreted as extractive behavior so I thought Non-Extraction would be short way to say it.

oh, those are your words... I'm so used to people not thinking for themselves & just copy / paste the latest thing that caught their eye.

non extraction is an interesting way to say return the surplus to the system because otherwise there will be net loss. I'm not sure in the tags line world we live in if any one word or even simple sentence is enough to convey it.

I don't mean to come off critical, I was just curious as to where this came from... I see now you're capable of your own thoughts, so many here aren't.

rock on permaculture!

I suppose one way to think about it is, which is easier to determine: if one is extracting from a system or if one is producing surplus? I find surplus hard to define for my situation but I more often know when I'm trying to squeeze more out of a system than I should through feedback. Glad my choice to try rewording the 3rd ethic sparked some discussion!

providing a surplus isn't always a good thing. too much of a good thing is a thing.

maybe the 3rd ethic is more about balance. i think it's more about addressing surpluses & deficiencies and making changes based on the observation. mant think it's about redistribution to to the 2nd ethic. it's so much more than that. good luck with the succinct thing though. ;)

I really appreciate finding this conversation today. Thank you for your perspective. I find it more enriching than "fair share" that I've seen in several places.

The phrase "fair share" reminds me of the "everyone gets a trophy " during kids soccer games. It doesn't convey a good feeling for me.

Your definition of this ethic sits right with me. Thank you for sharing.
