It's a sexual thing. Humor is a mental/social device used for icebreaking, and in the social/sociosexual marketplace, the burden to approach and break ice has always been on men.
Also, a significant part of humor is to break taboos and social convention, which again is male territory, because females are more conformist than men due to being far less risk-prone.
