*just throwing out an idea but open to suggestions. please keep in mind that I don’t know anything about anything*

Relays allow 1000 people or less and keep an eye on the content being posted through their relay. Communities use trusted relays.

What you don’t want is for nostr to become the poster child for governments as to why more mass surveillance is needed. 😬

The problem is the legislation is so nebulous that people are unsure how vast something like 'hate' would be interpreted. And the punishment is so high that it's safer not to risk it.

And very likely (such is apparently is the case in China) in reality it means punishment (with the widest interpretation) for the 'enemies' of a regime and a blind eye for 'friends'.

1000 seems way more managable than any relay trying to become nostr's one biggest server. I'd say that's the best and simplest starting point - 1 relay per community.

The more complicated versions would be something like 10 relays that allow mixing of communities. So 10 people "ultimately in charge" because they own the relay and have the strongest decisions, with lots of smaller communities with different moderators and rules for what's allowed. This is a more difficult problem, but helps keep responsibility managable.

Communities have their own rules for posting, but still need to comply with whatever the relay operators' rules. If the communities don't like those rules, they can go to a different set of relays just like individual users.

Multiple relays would be more resilient to server take down or blocking, an important consideration. This also makes it so one relay operator can't censor people, bypassing a problem common in the fediverse.

this is exactly what we are building and why, for about 2 years now. i dont think its humane to have large sweatshops of suicidal contractors getting paid minimum wage to watch filth all day..

breaking it down and staying decentralized, with smaller focused moderation teams that are actually part of the community is better.

will it work? no idea.. but finally there is a tiny bit of traction.

if you believe in this too, dont use or promote nostr aggregators like primal. they will never moderate, and they will be forced to in the future, the same way big tech does (nothing changes).
