Everyone acts to their own perceived benefit, even when serving others or making self-sacrifices. The perceived benefit may not be immediate or short term, some act on much longer time horizons.

Where did you get that we're all one? I think that may be an over-simplification. But I do agree there are many ways to perceive, perhaps as many ways as there are those who perceive.
