Also, to make a difference in people's lives, it's not just creating innovative ideas but also effectively bring them to the market. There has been millions of innovations you don’t see or have never heard off because it lacks the second part.

Btw Elon in an interview with Wired in 2012, he specifically talked abt not building patents for spaceX because of China :

“We have essentially no patents in SpaceX. Our primary long-term competition is in China—if we published patents, it would be farcical, because the Chinese would just use them as a recipe book”
