"man, that's old school"

was the comment I got when I explained how I sell blankets on nostr.

I found that to be so amusing because nostr, Bitcoin and the lightning network are arguably "new school" since the technology is pretty fresh.

but yes, fundamentally, how I do business on nostr is old school.

---

them: when people want to buy, they just message you?

me: yeah, then I send them a lightning invoice

okay so they pay it. is it like instantaneous?

pretty much

so you have their money but you haven't even made the blanket yet. wait! that means...

yeah, I could totally scam them.

you totally could!

right, but I don't. I don't because I want their business. my reputation is tied to my npub. the longer I do good business, the better my reputation.

man, that's old school.

You could totally scam them... and never sell another blanket 🤔🙄

I'd rather make blankets 😆

Seems like a no brainer to me, lol.

We do need a reliable delayed settlement mechanism with arbitration on Bitcoin though. Sometimes that is a feature not a bug. We can build it. I have some ideas conceptually

It's hard. What are you thinking of?

yeah there's likely a use case for that.

but hey, I just make blankets 😅

so the new school is lie, cheat and scam?

we need the old school back then

I think the intent is that new school has a lot of security and trust tools built into the tech to prevent lying, cheating and scamming but old school just relies on human trust.

well, yeah, well designed protocols... but protocols existed long before computers, they are just a procedure or ritual

the fraud is still an imposition and a conspiracy and the protocols are countermeasures, you could say that bitcoin was the first, and nostr is now the second protocol that has mechanisms built into it that make deception more difficult

It's pretty normal if you get a custom made product you pay upfront. Or at least where i live it is. Maybe depending on the price you do half before and half after but as a merchant you can also easily get reverse scammed.

at least dealing with PayPal chargebacks is not a thing when using Bitcoin

Hi karo 🏴‍☠️🤟😉 Haha, I love the irony! It’s funny how “old school” business principles like trust and reputation are making a comeback in the digital age through decentralization and transparency. It might be old school, but it’s also a lot more honest and straightforward than what we’re used to in the traditional financial system. Trust is everything, whether it’s through a handshake or a Lightning invoice!
