If we plan to fly to Europe this summer, do we need real ID in addition to our passports? I have to renew my license in June, is it recommended to go through the extra nightmare of real ID?

Depends what country in Europe but you'll have to get some kind of permit to drive with a foreign licence in most of them.

IDP, but it is easy to get if you already have a driver license, but now this Real ID crap rears up and complicates that. I guess we have to comply if we want to rent a car in Europe.
