I was with my 2 kids at another childs birthday party. 2 parents decided to talk about the danger to their kids that was seemingly now around every corner from random unsavoury individuals ready to pounce in the public washroom.

There was no talk about raising your children with education just we must stop bad people because we are scared.

I was privy to the conversation but not part of it. I felt for the parents trapped in fear, and feel that only knowledge can help xenophobia or worse.

These scenarios seem to unfold more often; finger pointing at stranger danger, with an oblivion to the evil that can lurk within arms reach. Knowledge is so crucial, on topics like this especially. I feel like I’ll never be able to do enough to educate or prepare my children for ‘what’s out there’.

I agree, my daughter is 7 I can’t be there to protect her 24hrs a day.I have to teach her what a penis and vagina are, how to grab pull and twist, and hope shes confident in herself if theres ever a time.

I have to teach my son to respect everyone even if its not popular.

The weight is heavy, but its worth it.

I’ll never understand the attraction of keeping kids in the dark about the facts of life, from the biological aspects to the fact that there are predators and how to be safe. They won’t be any safer or any more moral for being kept ignorant; they’re actually far more vulnerable that way.
