Early spring tunnel check ✅

Outside the snow is still piled up but inside is a balmy 75°F. Overwintered kale (center beds), onions & carrots growing fast, plus spinach & tatsoi (already harvested out). No need for heat in this tunnel even up here at 44°N (zone 5b), we grow year-round.

The two empty beds are now reseeded with more spinach, arugula, greens mix and radish ready for end of April before the whole tunnel is flipped for summer crops of tomatoes 🍅, peppers 🌶️ and baby ginger 🫚.

Very cool!

Love seeing clean farms 😍.

Looks a lot like our funnel when we were doing veg.

We used grow beds full of salad mixes this time of year. Was more profitable for us than the heads of lettuce.

No dig?

Yes 100% no till here. People always ask how we keep things so tidy and keep up with the weeds. I say I don’t have time for weeds 😆 No till helps with that.

Early spring greens are def one of the best crops! Absolutely beautiful, no pests at that time of year, and highly profitable. We opted for a low maintenance selection of overwintered veg this year but with still room for a few beds of greens now that some beds are already harvested/cleared out. Kale tops will be cropped soon and those beds replaced w/bok choi any day now.

Here’s last year’s tunnel for comparison:
