Liberals are dissidents. They speak out against all sides as appropriate. Sometimes that's the establishment, sometimes that's your "own side".

I hate that liberal has lost this meaning. That many now think it means exactly the opposite of that. That the left calls people to the right of themselves and/or those who support the Dem establishment liberal. And the right uses the term for everybody left of themselves, seeing little disagreement among that huge death of people.
