yea it depends on what people want out of the fedi. I'd love to understand what others are hoping for but I basically DO want to beat Twitter in trying to be the civic/cultural public square. this medium seems perfectly designed for that and afaict other goals are achievable with other tools. but decentralized social media could mean the whole world participates equally in collectively deciding what info, ideas and art goes worldwide viral, without the say of corporate ads/algos.

We've had people impersonate cops to kill government officials. In a country where self defense via firearm is normal, how can we now normalize letting yourself or people you love be apprehended by dudes in masks? Pretty much. The best big picture way to solve our problems is to make the market more competitive. To help small businesses. Government is needed to do that because businesses have a huge incentive to monopolize, merge and sell out. If you love independent artists that challenge the status quo, you need to advocate that everyone move to decentralized social media without algos.
