you grew up in certain places at a time that were great for straight white men and much worse for so many others. the US was competing against places destroyed by war and there were massive fed taxes on the rich that subsidized suburbia for people like yourself. you were living on land nowhere near where people like yourself could trace back to having "evolved".

yea it depends on what people want out of the fedi. I'd love to understand what others are hoping for but I basically DO want to beat Twitter in trying to be the civic/cultural public square. this medium seems perfectly designed for that and afaict other goals are achievable with other tools. but decentralized social media could mean the whole world participates equally in collectively deciding what info, ideas and art goes worldwide viral, without the say of corporate ads/algos.
