What are the tricks for optimizing relays in Amethyst specifically?

As a borderline autist with OCD tendencies. It's quite frustrating how variable the number of followers is. Even with no changes to relays used sometimes it says 15, sometimes 150, sometimes 350... It's chaotic and random. And I feel Incentivized to add 10+ relays to "gather" all my followers. IDK it's just not clear how to optimize
