It was most likely a Russian provocation. Ukrainians don’t care much about the elections; what matters more to them is their salary in euros and the chance to work outside Ukraine.
Actually, the Russians have never had any elections either. Oligarchs took control first, then the security forces, and Russians were always told who to vote for, or the election results were just faked.

Probably not. He's really popular. For no objective reason. He just seems to read what the people are expecting. It's like tapping into the collective unconscious.
And even if we choose someone else, the problem is that this person will still be just another Putin. They are deeply entrenched in power in Russia. Not Putin's clones, but members of the security forces.
