Both use docker images underneath the hood so technically the marketplaces can be shared or at the very least: they can run the same apps.

#[1] true?

No. The two systems are entirely incompatible.

Umbrel is an app that runs on top of a Linux distro. You can think of Umbrel as a more convenient and beautiful way to discover and install Docker containers. It also offers custom UIs for a couple of the containers. Essentially, Umbrel makes it easy to get up and running with a server and to use certain services more conveniently.

Start9 is an actual Linux distro. It is the first viable Linux distro optimized to administer a personal server, rather than a personal computer. Debian, Ubuntu, etc (also Mac, Windows, iOS, Android) are all optimized for administering a personal computer. Yes, they accomodate server software, but the user must "pop the hood" and administer the server from the command line, which requires significant expertise and time.

With Start9, everything you would ordinarily do from the Linuix command line has been transformed into a graphical interface. So not only does it facilitate the discovery and installation of containers, it also empowers the user to self administer the server and its software in perpetuity. This includes form-based service configuration, automatic dependency management, the viewing of important properties, simple buttons to replace command line commands, service backup and restore, ongoing health checks, a notification system, viewing service logs, even the basic ability to stop and start a service. Umbrel does none of this.

All this power with Start9 requires upstram applications to be packaged specifically for Start9, just as they must be packaged for Mac or Windows. You can not just run a Docker container on your Start9 server.

In short, Umbrel gives you a meal, Start9 enables you to fish for yourself. We also have incredible customer support with an average response time of under 10 minutes. From what we can tell and from the many people who have migrated from Umbrel, they rarely reply to cusomter inquiries at all.

Very detailed thank you!

Start9 by far, in a landslide. Tried both. Not even close. Start9 is absolutely better in every way! Exceptional software, and hardware and exceptional customer support!

👏👏👏

Thanks!
