It prevents evapotranspiration while the roots re-establish. The roots aren't trying to pump water up to the leaves to keep them from wilting, and there should be enough energy in reserve to regrow the leaves. That's the theory as I remember it anyway.

Huh. That does make sense.

Now I just have to try to remember that the next time I transplant a tree that I have to trim roots on.
