Knots Analytics: How Many Sybils?

Attached is a cool chart from Coindance re: the number of nodes in the past couple of months.

You can see an uptick in Knots nodes (the lower green line) at the beginning of May. Meanwhile, at that time, the "total" node count (the top line) was basically flat, while the count of Bitcoin Core nodes started to fall. This indicates organic choice by about 1500 users to switch from Core to Knots.

Then, around May 10, we see evidence of a spike: total node count AND the Core count start increasing in lockstep. This indicates that a significant number of nodes (500 or so) got spun up around that time and were all Core nodes.

Are these sybils? Probably a few are, but most of it is just probably noise -- the total node count barely exceeds the range it was in before.

In short, these charts provide evidence that Bitcoin Knots growth has been organic, and there may be a few sybils spinning up Bitcoin Core nodes in response, but not that many.

Looks promising !

I’m going to do it soon 🙇🏻‍♂️

I've often wondered what kind of threat could be posed by people spinning up tens of thousands of sybil nodes on AWS.

I tried to look into the game theory behind that kind of attack, but didn't find a definitive answer. If you know of any resources that could help a pleb understand that I'd like to learn more 🤙

Interesting 🤔

I started running a node less than 1 month ago motivated by all this discussions.

I never run one before. Tried running Knots, but was not sure I found the real PGP key from nostr:nprofile1qqs0m40g76hqmwqhhc9hrk3qfxxpsp5k3k9xgk24nsjf7v305u6xffcpzemhxue69uhhyetvv9ujumt0wd68ytnsw43z7g9rp72 (given that I heard it was hacked before I wanted to be more preocautious), so I just used Core because I had a better feeling about having the real PGP key.

But I want to switch to knots when I have more time.

So, maybe some people just started running their own node after this discussion, doesn't mean it's an attack.
