Right to some extend. However there will be advanced end users who will run their own relays. And in difference to classical networks it is very easy to simply switch from a relay which is censoring - if you do not like it.

But’s what’s the incentive to run relays. Relying on charity and trusting is much less secure than people protecting their income if they’re earning money from their relays.

Well for me personally the incentive is currently that I ensure that I have a backup of all my own notes and replies. Otherwise they might disappear.

It is like with every technology - you need personally time to master it and when we talk on a society level it is the same, but much slower. Even nowadays most of the people did not understand the dependencies which they have on large corporations - until their data is gone.

Incentive comes when their is a need to, but obviously the tools need to be available at this time.

You’re right. I hadn’t thought of it that way. To secure your own data would be valuable. I guess it’s a bit like bitcoin. No one needs bitcoin until they do.
