Nostr doesn’t have captchas or any barrier to entry like that, so there’s a spam problem. This is a client-side way of stopping most of it from getting through to your screen. If an account doesn’t have “x” number of followers from your network (people you follow) it won’t show up in your timelines.

This is something another client did early this year and it worked very well.

Huh, neat. Could this also be used to filter other types of posts besides spam?

Theoretically, any client can censor anything they want, that goes for Fedi too.

This particular formula, depending on how many followers you require accounts to have (it’s configurable) can inadvertently hide new accounts from the TL, but my understanding is that they’re still visible in conversations, so it’s no great loss. Since not everyone will be using it, they’ll naturally accrue followers with time and won’t be caught in the filter anymore.

They unfortunately won't, since even replies are vulnerable. But I could show muted stuff behind a button or something
