If they open source it and everyone can verify that the code only stores your “identity” locally and doesn’t/can’t share the data, you get pretty decent privacy protection while preventing your kid from using a firearm without permission/supervision. If you zoom out 30-50 years, I bet most firearms employ this tech.

The right move - in my opinion - is getting it implemented in a way that respects the rights of the average person, and also has a measurable impact on reducing the horrific stuff that happens when powerful weapons fall into the wrong hands.

I also thought it was really cool that this guy at 15 encountered a shooting and instead of turning anti-gun, went out and worked 10 years to make gun ownership safer.

I agree wholeheartedly that it needs to be FOSS. Not even for contributions, but for the sake of sovereignty preservation. That would be my contingency as well. I want to be able to compile the firmware and install it myself.

It’s one of those things where it would begin to satisfy demands on both sides of the discussion. Sovereignty and safety. Freedom and restrictions. It’s a step in the right direction.

I agree. I’m not against compromises that don’t violate the principle. So long as it really doesn’t.

In governmental warfare (against a malevolent state) they would be susceptible to EMP, etc. though. It’s worth a thought.

EMP only a problem for long wires or close range. Even unhardened electronics can handle more ionising radiation than a human body.

My fears are condensation, dust, or flat batteries at the moment I really need it.

Yeah, this should absolutely be an airgapped system. Updates should require manual intervention of the gun owner.

And you know my policy? If it ain’t broke, I ain’t updating mission critical hardware.
