In five years of going to bitcoin conferences, I’ve literally never had a truly bad experience with someone. People who fly out to be at places are almost always reasonable.

To put this in context, I’ve had thousands of brief meetups over the years and nothing truly bad happened even once. The worst outcome was I had someone be slightly awkwardly clingy a few times, but nothing worse. So this is a 99.9% social uptime situation, and even the 0.1% is still okay.

I am kind of at the top end of the gray zone of security. Super-celebs have security teams and don’t walk around on the conference floor. I do personally walk around the place by myself (which yes is a friction as I get dozens of interactions and photo requests and such), and when offered security by the conference to get out, I turn it down since I find it very hectic but manageable and worth it.

People who are negative (and usually anon) online tend to either not go to these events or don’t show their face if they are there. That seems on brand. No skin in the game.

This is a positive space, and I think we’re going to win.

Loved reading this Lin, it's so important to have skin in the game!

Enjoyed watching as I couldn't make it. Thank you. Nothing stops this train.

I feel I would be in that .1% or the new .001%. Awkward enough it’s kinda funny.

Yeah even people I disagree with on this or other platforms I simply choose not to engage with if I see them in person. I think most prominent Bitcoiners handle the micro-but-becoming-kind-of-big-deal fame with grace

So was the Vegas conference a bad experience and do you disagree with their stance ?

To be fair, you also can defend yourself pretty well, which obviates a lot of the need for security. Perhaps the lesson here is to learn some grappling to have this kind of self confidence.

Squeaks doesn’t fuck around.

It would be a pleasure to bump into you, but I’m not the type to say anything. Just tip my hat out of respect and keep moving.

Respect 🙏 🫡

IMF, BIS. And their EU MiCa. They are still trying to destroy bitcoin. We are watching and making sure bitcoin exists. You can help too if you use bitcoin.

Your presentation was excellent, thank you.

Stay safe Lyn 🙏🏿

Don’t get too complacent 🫡

Lyn, your security detail is essentially all the people around you - thousands of them. They'd all snap to your defense in an instant.

The day I consider hiring security for a bitcoin conference is a sign I shouldn’t come.

My experience there always humbles me, in a literal sense. People come up and say how much my content matters.

Rather than take this as an ego boost, it reminds me I have responsibility. It reminds me never to say things online I wouldn’t say in person. It reminds me of the importance of consistency.

I can’t imagine being in a position where I wouldn’t just walk around freely. I practice opsec, so I minimize easily-planned prior threats, but apart from those I think no matter how big your audience is, walking around a bitcoin conference freely seems the right thing to do.

People run into me in elevators, conference walkways, etc. I do minimize my conference appearance and am cautious of my opsec, but once I am out I’ll sign things or take pics with folks who see me and say hi.

What a genuinely good and encouraging sentiment. We got this

Why not devise something better than conferences? Bitcoin is a silent revolution. It should never catapult anyone to a celebrity status. There are many ways to promote and proselytise without being in the center of attraction. Zen masters have always set an example how this can be done. Our next generation will figure it out. If you are meditative, intuitive and awakened spiritually, you can also figure it out. Security guards will never be needed.

Conferences aren't for catapulting people anywhere. Conferences in all industries are intended as ways to get the actual people doing actual work into the same place for networking purposes. The big fat celeb keynotes are tertiary to anything else.

💛

Satoshi was 'anon' Lyn. Are you saying he didn't have any skin in the game?

The best way to 'be' in the Bitcoin world is to be anonymous. Satoshi set the example right from the start. You can be a powerful voice - very powerful in Satoshi's case - without needing to attach any 'real life' identity to that voice.

I am a big fan of consistent anons. Gigi, Calle, Rockstar, Shinobi, etc.

Satoshi had an existential type of reason to be totally anon. And he didn’t cash checks digitally he couldn’t settle. A benign master.

Most others aren’t like that. They just post stuff online. They don’t build companies, contribute to open source, or fund stuff. They don’t put skin in the game.

Takes a special kind of person

Satoshi Nakamoto's success is consistent and its financial price keeps rising very high.

Winning 🧡🗽💜

Saw you, wanted to bug you for a selfie, but out of respect under the circumstances didn’t because I can only imagine how that must be! Thank you for being real.

💪🏴‍☠️😉

Fame cost. The only thing comes to my mind, girl learn to protect yourself first of all, to feel safe. It comes with the job.

What happened that initiated this thread?

I have never liked conferences and always try to avoid them if possible. But then again I am not a public figure. That said I spend an hour or two each day watching content including your appearances) that helps me to navigate these tricky economic times. We are all blessed that we can get what we need on line, patreons, and from Grok. Something in your gut told you to be careful. Pay attention to your intuition and feelings as there are many strange people out and about these days.

It was an honor to meet/take a picture with you in Vegas
