I genuinely think they cannot access content of chats but people are typing everything into google and facebook without even realizing it. So many people just type amazon.com into google to then click the first link to the website.

No man. The other day we were talking about Spain and some other stuff via chat and she literally called me two hours later telling me about vacation ads popping up all over Facebook for her. Just an example. This has happened many times.
I have ads blockers everywhere, I never use Google for search, only maps from time to time and I try to limit only when alternatives are failling. I don't have any Facebook/Meta account, not using Whatsapp for 10 years or more.
Not having such issues. The solution is simple, if you are not sure about what they collect and don't agree with their terms, don't use their services.
I hear you. I also don't have FB or X or Instagram. They only reason why I still have WhatsApp is my mum. She just doesn't get Signal for whatever reason. She's pretty much the only person I communicate with via that app.
Just tell her Whatsapp was rebranded as Signal. UI is 90% the same anyway. 🤣
I have just one friend who always refuse alternative, then remain the issues of groups, like colleagues for sport activities or parent groups for school. But I send SMS and don't care about them of they are not willing to do an effort.
