You need to use a shitty Google Pixel.. I have one. Yes you can run Android apps via F-Droid or APKCombo.
Yeah only works on Pixels.
You can also use Aurora Store or Obtainium for apps.
I have not had problems running apps on graphene even when using sandboxed google play
you can use any pixel phone on the grapheneOS list. the web installer is stupid easy. totally guided.
tell your friend to go to the GrapheneOS website and read the install info. they give it to you when you use the webinstaller.

pixel 6a and above i believe. its gotta be a bootloader unlocked phone, so not bought from a carrier, if they want a new one they should buy directly from google ( or buy a used one...seen several on shopstr for sale).
GOS is very flexible these days. Most stuff runs and you can't even tell you're doing anything different. Play services can be installed on a different profile and will run all the bank apps, etc. All this Nostr stuff can be installed with Obtainium, Zapstore, F-Droid, or various other sources. Overall it's pretty good, and no tracky spammy business.
Only thing that won't work is Google Pay.
no work around, around this? i use a prepaid CC to stack sats via shakepay app in canada 🙏
not so far. the devices and os are capable. the banks have to add it to a list.
Correct, it's fair to point out that it's not GrapheneOS's fault actually. It's the lazy banks. I work with a couple in Europe and three in the US. Only one of the European ones allows me to directly use NFC through their app. All the others require Google Pay.
6a doesn't take great pictures. Not sure if it is the camera, GOS or me though.
you got a lot of answers already but a few thoughts:
On Phones:
I wouldn't go before pixel 7
-pixel 6s got the first line of in house google processors (tensor) and they were good but tended to overheat
-pixel 7 really good phone and camera and may be able to get a cheap used one on swappa.com, they are a little slow compared to the modern ones so it depends
-pixel 8 and pixel 9 are both excellent and took big steps forward in performance and security
On Graphene:
-installation of graphene has gotten really easy, basically just connect the phone to a computer and run some software
-by default things are more private but you can run most droid apps, you install them through aurora store and the os does some steps to keep you from giving google your data
Pixel 8 & 9 have substantial hardware security improvements, so I would suggest starting there.
The 8a is cheap and good.
The 9pro is powerful and future proof.
