why are the Japanese obsessed with masks, tell them covid is over and the masks actually didn't protect you from covid

Most of east Asia has been wearing masks for longer than I've been alive.
Anyone who is sick or does not want to get sick wears a mask to reduce the spread of flu, especially on public transport.
I guess it's the same across most large cities anywhere now.
