I won't try to talk you back into it, but sports fandom is a healthy part of the social fabric. Politics is displacing all of the institutions that used to bind us together and the result is a highly tribal nation constantly at each other's throats.

I know you take part in other aspects of civil society, but for some of us this is a primary vehicle to socialize and relate to people we otherwise have little in common with.
