I saw Michael Saylor at a grocery store in Los Angeles yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.

He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”

I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying.

The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.

When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

True story ?

Mostly 😉

I was the cashier!!!

Lol what

how can he afford 15 Milky Ways wtf

There is no second best.

Oh dang! Not sure what’s wrong! Thanks for trying.

I will be back

Got it thru. Glad you got it sorted.

Godspeed 🫡

Thank you for zap 🤜

Just got node sorted at least for the meantime, self custodied zaps are back on the menu for me.

Definitely need to upgrade my node though for better uptime and less issues.

I'm serious when I say if you hit snags just reach out. Node questions are my favorite questions to tackle. If I can't figure it out we'll get the hive mind on it and solve it that way. Some of the best node runners around I'm proud to be peered with 🫡

You should consider finding an old PC or even mini-PC, slapping some extra storage space in it, and setting up an Umbrel node. Umbrel seems to be more stable and reliable than pi, and an old PC shouldn't cost you more than a couple hundred bucks with additional storage. Just a thought.

If he has an active Alby wallet, and put the correct LN address in his profile, the problem is more than likely on your end. Or there's some FUBAR network at the time you tried zapping.

*network issue

I tried from 2 nostr clients but I will try again

Still no satisfaction.

Idk, does it work from your machine? Lol I'm able to zap other profiles so I dunno why it'd be assumed to be me 🙇‍♂️

I just tried and I'm also unable to zap him. I got a "failed to fetch invoice" error. That indicates that the problem is on Alby's side of the network. Have you tried zapping a different Alby user? If I were you, I would try a 1 sat zap to some other Alby user to see if it's systemic, or specific to his account.

I can’t zap either. Maybe the address is wrong, because I use nostr:npub1getal6ykt05fsz5nqu4uld09nfj3y3qxmv8crys4aeut53unfvlqr80nfm exclusively with no problems.

Looks like my node is down.

How many times can I resurrect my raspberry pi node?

Do you know what, exactly, is the cause of this repeated failure?

My node seems to be afk

Can’t access via Zeus, when I get home I’ll try restarting it

You should migrate that to better hardware. RasPi is fun to learn on, but it’s not really the right tool for the job.

Ya, it might be time to consider other options. Maybe a Start9, maybe an Umbrel, maybe an Alby Cloud subscription for a few months while you figure it out. Hell, you can even run Alby for free by connecting it via NWC to another wallet. If the pi keeps dying, I think it's a sign that a change may be warranted.

I’m using the alby hub connected to my raspberry pi running umbrel but yeah it’s definitely time!

All the “build your own node” chest thumpers need to see this.

I enjoy running a node for a lot of reasons, but I am always honest with people who want to do it that it’s not a way to generate income, and it’s not without a steep learning curve.

If you have a Raspberry Pi, you’re much better off just setting it up as an nostr:npub1getal6ykt05fsz5nqu4uld09nfj3y3qxmv8crys4aeut53unfvlqr80nfm Hub which doesn’t require much maintenance.

If you really want to go all in, you should plan to spend a few hundred bucks on a decent used mini PC with a faster processor and plenty of disk space.

For most people who just want to use Lightning and not run their own hardware, there are a bunch of decent options.

Even Alby Cloud, which is a fantastic, all-inclusive option should be thoroughly considered before jumping in. Once the intro price goes away, you're dealing with a 21k sat fee, which at today's prices is close to $21USD per month.

If you're someone who is new to Lightning, or a casual user who isn't transacting hundred of thousands of sats per month, you really have to ask yourself if such an expense can be justified.

Don't get me wrong, people who have technical aptitude, and a significant transaction volume should absolutely consider hosting their own node and/or using Alby Hub. But I think we might be discouraging the use of custodial or even non-custodial wallets when they could be better solutions for a lot of people.

I am talking about the free version that you can run on almost any kind of computer.

💯 and I use nostr:npub1getal6ykt05fsz5nqu4uld09nfj3y3qxmv8crys4aeut53unfvlqr80nfm Hub. I also built a node. But the PITA factor of it outweighed the be your own bank factor.

The price will adjust to the increased purchasing power of bitcoin.

We will also have a blog post coming up talking about the learnings when trying to live on a bitcoin standard.

As it should 😊

Exactly. There are options. Not everyone is going to want to run a node.

Do you run start9?

Regardless of what you run, I found a great amount of increased uptime migrating off my raspberry pi and onto a little bitty Dell Optiplex. If you wanna talk node stuff any time lemme know 🫶

It actually was 21 Milky Ways

😬

#Nostr needs more #pasta
