Considering Mutiny runs in a browser, is it always awake to receive and send? Or the standalone apps for that matter.

Mutiny is releasing Nostr Wallet Auth (NWA) today!
NWA provides a better and more secure way to connect using Nostr Wallet Connect. To showcase this it has also been implemented in Zapple Pay for you to try it out.
