Do these devices allow you to hop messages off of each other?
Yes, default is 3 & max is 7 hops. More hops slows down/clogs things up.

Do they need a license/permit to run one of these? I wanted to have one at home and one in the car to walkie talkie. Not sure if it does voice.
I don’t know where you are but most regions have a portion of the bandwidth available for license free use. In the USA the 915MHz frequency falls in this ISM range.
It does not have the bandwidth for voice.

Yeah! STT<->TTS have gotten a lot lot better recently.
It would feel like you are using walkie talkie, but it’s simulated.
Heck new iPhones have the ability to synthesize your own voice.
So imagine having your partners voice setup on your phone and vice versa. It would be as close as walkie talkie can be.

Quasi. Textbasiertes walkie-talkie mit verschlüsselter Kommunikation. Nachrichten können hops über mehrere nodes machen, dadurch entsteht ein mesh-netzwerk. Gruppenchats sind auch möglich. 📡🤠🤙
Also kann man damit ein dezentrales WhatsApp aufbauen? Z.B. über ganz DE?
Die Anzahl der hops ist standardmäßig begrenzt auf 3, erweiterbar auf 7 (was nicht empfohlen wird). Man ist also in gewisser weise begrenzt. Allerdings habe ich noch keine Erfahrungswerte welche distanz man mit entsprechender Ausrüstung mit den 3 hops erreichen könnte. Zusätzlich lassen sich nodes über das Internet verbinden um größere Distanzen zu überbrücken. Aber die Idee ist es ja gerade nicht auf funktionierendes Internet angewiesen zu sein 🤠🤙

Okay who has #meshtastic recommendations? I used to do mesh stuff in New York (https://www.nycmesh.net/) but it's been years and I'm out of the game / not familiar with meshtastic

Tried sending #ecash. The standard #cashu string was too long for a single message. But there is always a way 👀🤠🤙
Actual packet data size for 1 message is max. 237 bytes according to #meshtastic doxu.
This should result in the same number of characters. That itself is not sufficient for #cashu #ecash 👀

Nice! I haven’t tried the T-Echo but have accumulated a few other Meshtatic devices! Mostly sending messages to myself at the moment but there seems to be a growing Meshtastic community here in Australia.
